K.C. Munchkin on the Odyssey 2: How Close Before You're Just a Copy?
How many Munchies can your Munchkin munch before your Munchkin's all munched out? That's the question posed right on the box cover for K.C. Munchkin for the Odyssey 2. Released in Europe as Munchkin, this maze game's North American title is an inside reference to then president of Philips Consumer Electronics, Kenneth C. Menkin.
Designed and programmed by Ed Averett, Munchkin is very heavily based on Namco's 1980 arcade game Pac-Man, but not a direct clone. It was, however, similar enough for Atari to sue Philips and force them to cease production of Munchkin. Atari was exclusively licensed to produce the first play-at-home version of Pac-Man, but Munchkin hit store shelves in 1981, a year before Atari's game was ready. Atari initially failed to convince a U.S. district court to halt the sale of Munchkin, but ultimately won its case on appeal. In 1982, the appellate court found that Philips had copied Pac-Man and made alterations that "only tend to emphasize the extent to which it deliberately copied the Plaintiff's work." The ruling was one of the first to establish how copyright law would apply to the look and feel of computer software.

A D!? That makes me sad. It should definitely get get bonus points, or at the very least, be judged as an "edge-u-tainment" game!
People always look at me weird when i mention you could download games on a console from the 70s that predates the internet.
yeah i got the vcs after this ... i should have just upgraded this console ... based on aaron pery715s; comment
9:02 That made me laugh quite hard lol! 🤣
It's an interesting game, gets tough for sure
It seems to me that once you use the dongle and create a new ROM folder, you have to always use it. You cant just go back to just using the power adapter with the original game list. Is that right? and why cant you jsut take the games you like from the downloaded rom folder and put it in the game folder.
There's no accessible storage available to place the hundreds of games & their artwork, so the USB serves as external storage when you want to play those. However, as I mention in the video, at any time you can remove the OTG cable and the unit will function just the way it did before any modifications.
I can't wait for an Atari At mini. I had a 1040 STE. Loved every min of if back in the day unfortunately it was put in the skip in error when my mum cleared her house. Would you know what the E in STE ment. It was only that particular model that has it.
Ok, so it is a cardboard box, It's cool, but it probably won't last, so better to keep it stored away or displayed as a collectable.
I would expect that ultimately, a regular user would mount these pieces in a cabinet. Providing the functional cardboard enclosure is really just a bonus so you can try out and use right away without needing to mount elsewhere. Or, as you noted, only to use occasionally.
is that the panhandle?
It is, indeed. 😁 Our flora & fauna give it away!
It looks like a shovelware game that they wanted to do something with so they added the Yar's name to it. Kids are smarter than adults give them credit for, they will know it's crap too. The game will come out and it will fail big time. I see no reason to have this game in my collection. Speaking of collections, can we see yours? With as much as you claim to be into Atari, I hope that it's a much bigger collection than mine. Show me your arcade games too please! Atari was the king of arcades, so I just sort of figure that you have at least one actual original Atari arcade game in your collection.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. 😁 This entire channel is an ongoing process of sharing my collections - Atari and otherwise.
Worth it.
I have the Connect 'N Play of Pac-Man (35th Anniversary, 2012 - 2015) from Jakk's Pacific, I tried that out and it looks very close to the arcade version. It also includes other games in there like: Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Man Plus, Pac-Man 256, Mappy, Galaxian, Galaga, Dig Dug, Xevious, Bosconian and, "New" Rally X. Maybe you should try that out 1 day. ;)
Bubble bobble was my ultimate favorite omg I just had to buy this Thanks so much for your review!
Thanks for watching - hope you enjoy it! 😁
I so remember like it was yesterday going to a department store and playing the heck out of this in a demo. I never had an intellivision only the Atari 2600 but I played it every chance I got to. Thank you for sharing this.
Look at those graphics compared to the 2600 :o
I still remember at 6 years old playing Demon Attack on my Intellivision II and beating the Demon boss and being so excited i woke my dad up from a nap to tell him 😅😂 Luckily he understood my excitement 🤷 Good times!! Hands down THE BEST version of this game!
I gotten one from game stop only shows me the legal stuff and none of the clips
Oh, no!
One of the rare games that every port was good.
Best cover ever
You think its gonna be the blinky lcd games from the early 80s than it looks like a proper arcade game, Loved Berzerk on Atari.
The INTV version of this game looks and sounds so much better than the 2600 version.
in-hell-vision
...and then came K.C.'s Crazy Chase to try yo make him even further different than Pac-Man
I would do this on my brand new arcade cabinet but I would feel like im cheating
If it's a brand new cabinet, it probably wouldn't work. In later releases of Galaga this exploit was patched.
This looks cool!
Any rumors of another My Arcade SF2CE and/or SSF2CE version that keeps the upgrade of the Pro cabinet but retains the arcade software of the championship edition? The Pro versión of SF2CE/SSF2 was great but the software was atrocious!!!
Nothing I've heard yet.
Any rumors on My Arcade releasing a true version of Pac-Man, like they did with Ms. Pac-Man?
The Pac-Man Pro line last year (Pocket Player Pro, Micro Player Pro, etc.) are the closest they've come so far.
You never owned an the Odyssey 2?!!! Bro!!!!!!! KC was the bomb!!!
🕹️💜
Great 😊
The Intellivision version of Demon Attack appears to borrow more heavily from the arcade game Phoenix.
I'm learning that fact didn't go unnoticed by Atari!
Loved Demon Attack on Intellivision!
I read on a collector's website, that putting a protective case on a game can cause damage. The theory is, the case is not moisture proof. Therefore, any humidity/moisture in the air can get into the case and become trapped. Hence, causing water damage. He was choosing not to use protective cases for this reason. Thoughts?
I imagine that's possible. But since I keep all of my collectibles in my climate-controlled home, I'm much more comfortable risking the slight possibility of moisture than the very large possibility of accidental dents & dings.
Could it be that the Atari version is better than the Intellivision in this case?
To my eye, the Atari version is more colorful and the sounds are crisper. But it does lack that boss fight from the INTV version.
Amazing tutorial!!! Really appreciate the info in this one as now I've got a few of my favorite classics with me on the go. Quick question... is there a way to zoom in the screen for the Game & Watch Panorama ones? I love the artwork but for those games, I'd rather the actual game screen to be full screen. What's interesting is that when I run those games through the Retroarch core Multi MESS, the game is full screen but in black and white.
Glad you found it helpful! There are a number of options when you hit TAB and go into Video Settings. You can choose which artwork to use, and one is often just the game screen full, but varies from game to game.
This game has memories for me. My grandfather was a tech guy and he bought an Intellivision back in the day. He loved telling us how much better his Intellivision was than our Atari (basically mimicking the Intellivision commercials). The reality was that they both had great games. I had Demon Attack for Atari and for my grandfather's birthday, I got him this version for his Intellivision. I don't think he was that impressed because he was more into the sports games rather than arcade games, but the advantage was I could play it all I wanted. haha!
Does anyone else miss the cool game manuals that used to be included with games? I remember some of the really cool ones that came with early computer games and the Atari 2600 games and some early NES games. Some game creators put some really cool stuff in the manuals that made the games just that little bit extra special.
Great version of this game, one of the only ones to have the screen filling boss fight that got locked out of the VCS version due to a lawsuit. Bit hard on the hands due to those painful Inty controllers though, but worth it.
Oh, I didn't know about a lawsuit blocking the boss battle. I always assumed it was just a system limitation. Can you tell me more, or direct me an article? Interesting!
@@GenXGrownUp Yeah it was interesting. Essentially it goes like this: Atari got the rights to Phoenix, whose big selling point was the mothership fight. When Imagic announced Demon Attack, they sued Imagic for copyright infrignement (as I recall), and reached a settlement where Imagic could make/publish the game on the VCS & 8 bits, but had to remove the boss fight (which remained in the Intellivision version, one of the very few to get it).
I thought Imagic released the 2600 version first, and then when the Intellivision version came out with the boss battle, Atari sued.
@@jeremiahthomas8140 I just looked it up, you are correct, the lawsuit came after the Intelly version. Rob Fulop programmed the original, and the Intelly port was handled by someone else. Rob thought the boss was stupid because it would get them sued, which it did. All future ports were boss-free. Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't realized it was the Intelly one that triggered the lawsuit. That said... the Intellivision one was the highest rated review wise.
It looks like nobody ever put a fingerprint on the cartridge label.
The demographic for Intellivision must have been very different from Atari, even though in retrospect the two systems were very similar. Intellivision games are very, very inexpensive and are usually well taken care of with the overlays and box. Loose cartridges are usually dirt cheap. I really like the INTV system and enjoy it to this day thanks to a custom joystick from BDRetromods!
It was the overlays that drove this the most. Since a lot of the games are next to impossible to know what's going on without them, it was standard operating procedure to maintain the box, book and overlays and guard them with your life. We always had them stored on the shelf right next to the TV.
I probably would have bought that for $10. I don't have Space Shuttle but I'd find a copy if I had these.
Atari should remake their games based off the cover are alone on all their IP’s
That could be cool. This one's still owned by whomever scooped up the Imagic license, though.
You got a hell of a deal. I paid $75 just for the console
AS long as it works.

These days, I'm no longer convinced those things weren't happening, but as a youngster without the internet I was insulated from the majority of it in my little home town.
Hey, Jon, do you ever go back and play games for fun? Also did all the other Gen Xers get demoted to podcast because I haven’t seen them in a video for awhile.
I'm always playing games for fun. 😁
Sorry man, I swirched my grocery shopping to Sunday since I thought you were going live Saturday night. Watching rewind. 👍

I loved my Odyssey 2, even if it was weaker than the 2600. I would love an Odyssey 2 mini 😍
